I know it's not fair of me to ask anything of you wonderful folks that keep coming back here to read even though I haven't had much to say lately, but...
I just received word that my grandmother is in the hospital - they believe she's had a small stroke. So far, her tests are coming back good, and she's about to go get a CT scan, as she couldn't see when she woke up this morning, on top of the other stuff.
Not sure yet if she'll be admitted or if they will release her today.
Please send your happy thoughts, if you are so inclined, towards my grandmother's health and recovery.

Thursday Ten - It's Too Freakin' Hot Edition
1. It's nearly 90 degrees today. That's too hot. Perfect is about 15 - 20 degrees cooler. This hot hot weather? NOT FOR ME.
2. The coolest free app for the iPhone is Shazam. If you're driving down the road, hear a song and don't know what it is or who sings it, you can open the Shazam app, press the "Tag Now" button and hold the phone near the music. It'll "listen" and pretty quickly it'll come up with the name of the song and artist. (You can also link to buy it on iTunes. Sneaky folks there, eh?). Anyway, it's pretty cool, and this week, I've been tagging things like crazy while I'm in the car.
3. I love my sister's trade discount for hair products. I got two gigantic monster bottles of Redken product today and didn't even spend $20. We're talking the huge liter bottles. I won't be buying shampoo for a loooooooong time.
4. I have been on a painting frenzy. All that's left is my dining room and kitchen. I plan to paint them during Hubby's Saturday night poker party. I won't be able to sleep with all those loud guys laughing in my garage! Might as well be productive.
5. My husband ordered some Mix 1 protein drinks. Full of protein and antioxidants they are about 200 calories each with 3 servings of fruit/vegetables. I had a mixed berry drink for lunch today (plus some left over cuban black beans - no, it wasn't the best combo, but it was filling, for sure!). That was pretty tasty. I had Lime flavored last week - that was better. The Mango that Hubby and I split with dinner last night (I made waffles, I needed something redeeming nutritionally to go with the meal) was sort of gross. There's two other flavors I haven't tried yet, but they're definitely worth giving a shot.
6. I'm so glad the new season of Project Runway has started!
7. New songs I'm grooving to lately: "Bartender" by Rehab, "Bittersweet" by Sick of Sarah (Yes, I bought it because of the band name, but I like it anyway), and "Where'd You Go"by Fort Minor.
8. As I type, The Princess is playing in a friend's sprinkler and Pumpkin is passed out sleeping on the couch next to me. She fell asleep in the stroller walking home from story time today.
9. Pumpkin has figured out the potty training. She still waits til she has her bedtime diaper on every night to go #2. Annoying, yes, but I don't want to make a big deal about it and give her issues.
10. Tomorrow, I have a day that is almost all full of fun stuff and I can't wait to leave Hubby home with the girls while I gallivant all over the place doing things with no purpose. Yay.

It's NOT a Too-mah
Yes, we can reasonably establish that blogging, along with any other hobbies and personal interests that I have this summer are falling by the wayside, and no, I'm not happy with it. I'm also not happy with the fact that it's well over 80 degrees right now, Pumpkin is in her room hollering (clearly, she's attempting a nap boycott today and it's going to become a battle of wills). I have to say, though, today my will is likely stronger.
I went to bed with a headache last night, and I couldn't find my Tylenol PM. This is because my genius Hubby, who never puts anything away occasionally gets a bug up his butt to "clean" which involves moving things around to places that have no relation to the place where said things actually belong. Yeah, honey. Thanks. My Tylenol PM was MIA and I just decided to cross my fingers, hit the hay and hope that I would wake up refreshed, headache free and all of that good stuff.
I fell asleep hard, and had extremely strange dreams about running from the law with my sister's ex-boyfriend. I have had very odd dreams lately - so odd that a friend suggested perhaps I inhaled too much second-hand pot smoke at Rothbury (could it be? I have no idea). I woke up at five a.m. with my head pounding so hard I was in tears. I stumbled bleary eyed to the bathroom desperate for any method of pain relief.
All I could find was Pamprin.
I squint at the bottle. Okay, it's got acetominephin. That ought to do it (meanwhile, I was half thinking, "Great, the one time I'm not retaining water, and I take this - I'll probably have to get up twelve times to pee in the next hour."). I stumble back to bed where I lay down and the pain engulfed me. I started whimpering, so Hubby volunteered to get me ibuprofen from downstairs. No fool, I said, "Yes please!" and while he was gone, all I could think about was that maybe I was having a stroke.
You see, I read too much. You all know about my magazine addiction, how I read about 104 magazines monthly. Last month, I read something about a woman who had a stroke the day she had her hair done because she constricted her vertebra or some such while tilting her head back for a shampoo at the salon. Since yesterday I went to get my highlights touched up (thank you little sis) and I spent quite a bit of time tipped back into that sink, I got a little panicky. Oh my god, I'm having a stroke. I'm not going to wake up. I'm going to die in these ugly pajamas.
I never said I wasn't a drama mama.
I woke up 90 minutes later to the sound of The Princess bringing me breakfast in bed. My headache was gone and I was able to sit up and chow on my lone piece of toast smeared with just a teeny tiny bit of PB (I ate breakfast #2 out of her line of sight 20 minutes later - I was still so hungry!). Relieved to have the headache gone and to not have died with the sound of Arnold Schwarzenegger's voice in my head.

Rothbury Rothbury Rothbury
I'm back. Actually, I returned late Sunday night, but was tooling around the house yesterday in the midst of a thunderstorm and CRACK! A huge boom ripped through the house and then the lights flickered, some of our power didn't come back on, and our phone and internet went out. We called the AT&T folks who promised someone by "8 p.m.tomorrow" (dang, y'all), so that pretty much ruled out catching everyone up on how Rothbury was.
And it was AMAZING.
I won tickets by entering an essay contest about why I wanted to go to Rothbury and what events I was wanting to see - I dashed something down, figuring I'd never win. The criteria were music knowledge, creative writing, and basically, they just wanted to see if we had anything interesting to say as the winner not only would receive tickets but would be blogging the event daily from the Festival. I have always wanted to be a writer (the kind that gets paid) and so this was an amazing opportunity for me - considering tickets were $250 each, well, this was pretty damn close to getting paid.
We arrived Friday morning (though the Festival opened Thursday), and took awhile exploring the grounds and taking in shows. There were a lot of big names on the bill Friday - and we saw The Wailers (Bob Marley's Wailers - sans Bob, of course), then Snoop Dogg (who had his mind on his money and his money on his mind... actually, I think he might have had his mind on weed because he didn't stop talking about it), and then wrapping up with 311.
There were a lot of 20-somethings there, and I mean EARLY 20-somethings. Most of them were drunk, high, or both and so for the sober 30-somethings that we are, it was a little disconcerting at times to not be able to escape the smell of marijuana. The thing is, it could have been obnoxious, but they were all so... mellow. You'd think with thousands of people crammed into one area for a show with no seats that it might get a bit crazier, that people would get mad and get rough with each other. Nope. This crowd was just wanting to sing, dance, groove to the music and as Snoop kept urging them to do, "Smoke weed, get drunk and f*ck." (Then again, I wouldn't take advice from a man who had no idea what city he was in - as he kept referring to "East Lansing" versus Rothbury... Personally, I think one of his handlers told him the wrong city just to see how many times Snoop would say the wrong place).
The Wailers were awesome - sang lots of the Marley tunes. Snoop was alright. 311 was pretty amazing - and they did a cover of The Cure's "Love Song" (which is available on iTunes - I know, I've bought it!).
We then moseyed to a different area to catch the end of Modest Mouse's set. And then we went to the car to take naps. Seriously.
I wanted to catch the set of Theivery Corporation, but it wasn't supposed to start until just after midnight, and after a full day in the sun I just couldn't make it. We went back to the hotel for a short night of sleep before waking up early to hit the drive through Starbucks on the way back to Rothbury.
We got there early enough to do some yoga on site (Yoga to hip hop and R&B - too cool. I normally hate yoga because the Enya makes me want to gouge my eyes out, but I could totally get on board with this kind of yoga). Saturday's line up was mostly a day of unknowns for us. Someone had recommended the group Trampled By Turtles, so I gave them a shot and realized I really REALLY don't like bluegrass. We left early to go down to the Ranch Area where Dead Confederates was playing. They were rocking, even though their stage presence was sucky (the lead singer's hair was in his face and he slouched so hard over his guitar that I was quite sure that one day when he's thirty, he's going to have a hunchback). They were followed by Secret Machines, who was recommended to me. I had listened to some of Secret Machines' tunes before heading to Rothbury and to be honest, I liked their recorded stuff - but they slammed it hard live. Definitely worth it. After THAT we saw Gomez. I really enjoyed their sound, and am likely to download a lot more of their stuff.
From there, we had no idea how we were going to fill the rest of the day. Dave Matthews Band was set to start at 9, and we knew we wanted to take in their show - c'mon, it's DMB. You have to go to DMB. We decided to head over to the Odeum Stage where they'd be playing and catch all the acts prior. Hubby and I figured that when each band finished, we would just move closer to the front.
This was how we happened on Citizen Cope (awesome). Scoot. Then Michael Franti & Spearhead (totally totally amazing - I have since purchased a good chunk of their music catalog - they are a hip hop infused reggae and they are amazing showmen, and so entertaining). Scoot. This was how we happened to be the equivalent of 8 - 10 rows back for DMB. Seriously. Wow.
see all those people? They were BEHIND us.
Hey look- it's Dave.

Hey look- it's Dave. The DMB set was as I thought it would be - they are amazing musicians and I'd be remiss to say otherwise. I'm not a diehard DMB song - and unlike the fratty boys surrounding us, I didn't know every word to every song (except when they covered Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer" and then all the youngun's had to hush up because they didn't know it!). I hoped that they would sing "Recently" or "Say Goodbye" (my favorite DMB song, though it's not a hit by far - but it's their best tune, in my opinion which doesn't matter). Dave Matthews was a big sweaty mess when he was done. It was a good show. We cleared out of there at about 11:45 and had to walk to the car in the dark. It was so dark, and Hubby and I both had to pee so bad (we had been standing in the same spot for five or six hours and then some at that point), but there was NO WAY either one of us were braving the portapotty at the end of a long day IN THE DARK. Not to mention, people were getting progressively more altered - so many people stumbled out of DMB's show, too drunk or high to stand anymore.
Sunday we returned and decided to watch yoga rather than participate. We had a decidedly more mellow day - catching Ingrid Michaelson's set first. I adore her and though she wasn't the best fit for the event, she seemed really genuine and not at all jaded by the event and performing like so many other artists seemed to be (Dave Matthews? He could have been in Des Moines for all it mattered - it was just one more show). Then we just hung around catching bits and pieces of acts until Colbie Caillat came on at 5. She preceeded John Mayer and we were employing our "watch and scoot" strategy again.
Let me say this - she seems very sweet, I like her songs well enough... I am not sure why in the hell she was at Rothbury. I did feel bad because the douchey college-aged guys near us were mocking her. Yeah, I know they were there for John Mayer, and that she wasn't their cup of tea - but, seriously. Chill out boys. One of those guys had previously shaved his chest and it was growing back. I had fun making rude comments to Hubby about the dude's lapsed manscaping. I really hated how they were trying to impress each other by acting like jerks. Boys. Ugh.
John Mayer's set was the biggest surprise to me because I'm not really a huge Mayer fan. He has some songs I like, but for the most part - I can take him or leave him. His set was amazing - he was amusing and he really was amazing on the guitar. Pure insanity. I've downloaded several of his songs today and he may have a new fan (by the way, he's far bluesier live. I liked that).

He ended his set 30 minutes early and Hubby and I hit the car and came back home. Aside from the music, it was an amazing experience. Their "green" efforts resulted in 70%+ of the waste generated (and I'm talking trash, not... human) was diverted to recycling or compost - How awesome is that? Makes the tree hugger in me VERY happy. Getting to write about it was amazing. Experiencing it was amazing, and I plan to be back next year... fo sho.

Thursday Ten - The Ten Acts I Want to See at Rothbury
Hey, ya'll - I won tickets to Rothbury which started today, but I'll be joining in tomorrow. I won them by writing an essay about why I wanted to go and who I wanted to see - and I should be blogging from the event for a local media group (or you can follow my Twitter). So... here are the top ten acts I'm looking forward to seeing:
1. Dave Matthews Band
2. John Mayer
3. Ingrid Michaelson
4. Thievery Corporation
5. The Wailers
6. Modest Mouse
7. 311
8. Snoop Dogg
9. Fiction Plane
10. Gomez
And there's more. So so so much more. But I know the next three days are going to be INSANE. Totally insane. I'm so excited I could pee.

Thursday Ten - Better Late than Friday Edition
1. Ten p.m., watching "Hopkins" on ABC and eating a bowl of Honey Nut Cheerios. This day has been insane - The Princess had a swim lesson, then home where the Mother's Helper was homewith Pumpkin. Then, on to try to have my day of productivity while my kids were being cared for by the wonderful girl who my kids are really loving a lot.
2. In addition to pounding out some work this afternoon, my best friend and I painted 75% of the playroom. I wanted three white walls and a purple accent wall. I'll get the purple done over the weekend. I figure I'll take the girls on a run to Home Depot tomorrow to pick the paint (the plan is to pick two from a paint chip, the lightest and the one a smidge darker and the wall will be half-n-half).
3. It was well into the 80s and oh-so-humid today. This kind of weather makes my hair fuzz up. I love ponytails.
4. Oh! Speaking of hair, I got about 2 inches cut off the ends the other day and highlights. I like the cut a lot and I'm getting used to the highlights which were done in a pretty subtle way but I'm still a bit iffy on the color.
5. Pumpkin is picking back up with the potty training. As Emily advised a LONG time ago, I told her, "No PullUps during the day." I put her in a pull up or diaper for nap time and bedtime but beyond that, she's in the big girl undies. Two days straight of keeping them dry. Yay!
6. As a reward for staying dry, the girls and I made ice cream cone cupcakes yesterday - making both the cupcake batter and frosting from scratch. The frosting was so good - I don't really like cupcakes so much, but I made up for that by binging on pretzel sticks dipped in chocolate frosting.
7. I hate mosquitos.
8. I'm still crappy about updating my blog, but if you Twitter at all, click my link at the right and follow me. I'm not always interesting, but I do update more frequently. Plus, I think it's fun to share how truly useless I am.
9. My most recent download was an oldie, "Drive" by Incubus.
10. I am on a mission to learn to like running (okay, to learn to tolerate it). This week, it's walk four minutes, run three. Next week it's walk three, run four. And so on til I'm running and not walking at all. I don't know if I'll ever love it, but I know that as far as workout goes, it blows walking away as far as a cardio workout, and with my thyroid still being cranky, I'll take the extra kick of running.

The Dog Ate My Homework
I've been a pretty bad blogger lately, and it's not that I have nothing to say - no, that's not it at all. It's that finding time to string some words together has been a bit more difficult now that school is out and we are on a daycare hiatus (until September 2... Sigh).
The mother's helper thing was a good idea - I really like our little helper and the girls like her too. She spends A LOT of time with them outside and they love that. It's hard for me to separate myself from work-mom and home-mom and so for a day each week, I can be total work-mom mode, so that the times when I'm less work focused, I don't feel quite as guilty knowing I've spent all that time when my helper is here.
Pumpkin has done a mini-potty training backslide (dang!), and she also seems to be getting ready to dump her nap. She'll still take a nice long nap - but then she's up til 10 or later at night. Oy. I'm not really ready to phase out the nap, but I know it's coming soon. Pout.
Having said that, don't give up on me. I'm still here, I'm still reading your blogs - I'm just losing my grip on my routines and my reality a bit. Seriously - need my ticker. September 2 will be a banner day in the Chronicles house.

Pout.
